Tokyo to Hakuba: Train, Bus & Private Transfer Guide 2026–27
There are four main ways to get from Tokyo to Hakuba: Shinkansen (bullet train) via Nagano, the direct Azusa train from Shinjuku, highway bus, or private transfer.

There is no bullet train directly from Tokyo to Hakuba. The Hokuriku Shinkansen takes you from Tokyo to Nagano in approximately 90 minutes, followed by about one hour by bus or private vehicle to Hakuba.
There is also one direct train each morning: the Limited Express Azusa 5 leaves Shinjuku at 8:00 and arrives at Hakuba Station at 11:40.
If you are travelling directly from Haneda or Narita Airport with a family or group, we generally recommend a private van. You are met at the airport and driven directly to your accommodation, with no train changes or luggage transfers.

Central Tokyo to Hakuba
If you are spending two or more nights in Tokyo, send large suitcases and ski bags from Haneda or Narita Airport directly to the Hakuba White Fox office when you arrive in Japan. Allow around 48 hours for delivery. Travel into Tokyo with only a carry-on. The cost is approximately ¥2,500–¥3,500 per item.
Shinjuku to Hakuba: Direct Azusa Train
There is one useful direct train: Limited Express Azusa 5 from Shinjuku to Hakuba Station. It leaves Shinjuku at 8:00 and arrives Hakuba at 11:40. Fare is ¥8,270 (Yahoo Transit / JR, Sep 2026). This is the only direct service each day. If it is missed, travel is via Nagano.
Return: Azusa 38 leaves Hakuba 13:43 and arrives Shinjuku 17:26, also ¥8,270.
Tokyo to Hakuba by Shinkansen via Nagano
Any time other than the 8:00 Azusa, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station or Ueno to Nagano (88–123 minutes; ordinary reserved seat about ¥8,250 on the JR East e-ticket, ¥8,450 at the window). Hakuba is then one more hour.
Nagano to Hakuba, Alpico bus
The main winter bus is non-reserved. A reserved seat is not required. If the first bus is full, another is called and boarding is a couple of minutes after the first departure. Tickets are sold the same day, just outside the bullet-train ticket gates (JR ticket machines / east exit, bus stop 26). Cash or contactless card. About one hour to Hakuba Station or Happo Bus Terminal.
Winter adult fare: ¥3,500 one way (child 1–12 half). No return ticket. 2025–26 times: Alpico Nagano ⇆ Hakuba winter timetable. 2026–27 is not posted yet; times are usually close to the previous winter.
Pickup from Hakuba Train Station or Hakuba Bus Terminal can then be arranged to the chalet.
Nagano to Hakuba by private taxi van
Book a private taxi van from Nagano Station directly to your Hakuba accommodation. Typical fare is about ¥31,000 per vehicle and the journey takes about one hour. There is no additional transfer in Hakuba—the taxi takes you directly to your chalet. The taxi is booked separately.
Tokyo to Hakuba by Highway Bus from Shinjuku
Highway bus from Shinjuku (Basta, New South Gate, 4F) to Happo is the cheap slow option, about 5 hours. Green-season web fares are roughly ¥5,200–¥7,000 depending on the day. There is no return ticket; buy two singles.
Ski bags on the highway bus. Daytime: Alpico (timetable code AK) allows two items, so one suitcase plus skis, or two suitcases. Keio (KO) allows one item; a second only if there is space that day, and boards must be in a bag.
When a private van from Tokyo is better than the train
- The group will not all make the 8:00 Azusa
- Ski bags + several large suitcases (you did not send them ahead)
- Kids, grandparents, or anyone you do not want changing platforms at Nagano
- More than about seven people once bags are counted → mini-bus, not a van
From central Tokyo a private van is ¥140,000 one way. It is a 10-person van including the driver; with luggage that is about seven guests. Larger groups require a mini-bus.
Haneda Airport to Hakuba
Haneda is the closer Tokyo airport. The usual public route is taxi to Tokyo Station, bullet train to Nagano, then bus or taxi van to Hakuba.
1. Haneda → Tokyo Station → Nagano → Hakuba
Haneda to Tokyo Station by flat-rate taxi: about ¥7,600 to Chiyoda (Tokyo Station), plus expressway toll up to about ¥1,950, 20–40 minutes (late night higher). Then Hokuriku Shinkansen Tokyo or Ueno to Nagano, 88–123 minutes, ¥8,250–¥8,450 per adult.
Then either take the Alpico bus to Hakuba Station/Happo Bus Terminal, where White Fox pickup can be arranged, or book a private taxi van from Nagano Station directly to your chalet for about ¥31,000 per vehicle.
Time: about 3.5–4.5 hours once out of the airport.
Cost (indicative): taxi Haneda–Tokyo Station ~¥7,600–¥9,550 per vehicle; Shinkansen ¥8,250–¥8,450 per adult; Alpico ¥3,500 per adult winter or Nagano taxi van ~¥31,000 per vehicle. Shinkansen + Alpico is about ¥11,750–¥12,000 per adult, plus the Haneda taxi.
Only use this on an early or mid-morning landing that is on time, with bags you can move through the airport.
2. Haneda → Nagano Snow Shuttle → Hakuba Bus Terminal → pickup
Shared airport bus from Haneda, ski bags allowed, fixed timetable. About ¥13,000–¥15,000 per person. Arrives Hakuba Bus Terminal; pickup from there to the chalet. Use it when the timetable matches the flight. It is not a backup for a late arrival. Confirm current times on the Nagano Snow Shuttle site.
3. Haneda → private van to the chalet
A private van from Haneda works any time of day. About five hours to the door, ¥140,000 one way. The van seats ten including the driver, so with ski bags it is usually about seven guests. If the group is larger, a mini-bus can be quoted.
Narita Airport to Hakuba
Narita is further from Tokyo Station than Haneda. A “quick Shinkansen connection” on a map assumes you are already in the city.
1. Narita → Nagano Snow Shuttle → Hakuba Bus Terminal → pickup
Shared airport bus, about 6–7 hours, ski bags allowed, fixed timetable. About ¥13,000–¥15,000 per person. Arrives Hakuba Bus Terminal; pickup from there to the chalet. Use it when the timetable matches the flight. It is not a backup for a late arrival.
2. Narita → private van or mini-bus → chalet
Most winter groups, any landing after late morning: private van from Narita, about 5 hours, ¥150,000 one way. 10-person including the driver; about seven with ski bags. Larger: mini-bus. This skips Tokyo entirely.
3. Narita → Tokyo Station → Nagano → Hakuba
Narita Express or the airport limousine bus to Tokyo Station (NEX about 60 minutes). Then the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station or Ueno to Nagano, 88–123 minutes, ¥8,250–¥8,450 per adult.
Then either take the Alpico bus to Hakuba Station/Happo Bus Terminal, where White Fox pickup can be arranged, or book a private taxi van from Nagano Station directly to your chalet for about ¥31,000 per vehicle.
Time: about 5–6 hours once out of the airport.
Cost: NEX or limousine to Tokyo Station, plus Shinkansen ¥8,250–¥8,450 per adult, plus Alpico ¥3,500 per adult winter or a Nagano taxi van about ¥31,000 per vehicle. A late flight misses the last Hakuba bus.
Sending Ski Luggage from Tokyo Airports to Hakuba
If you are spending two or more nights in Tokyo, send your suitcases and ski bags from Haneda or Narita Airport directly to the Hakuba White Fox office when you land. Do not take them into central Tokyo.
At Haneda or Narita, use Yamato (Black Cat / Kuroneko), JAL ABC, or an airport luggage counter, and send bags direct to the Hakuba White Fox office. We transport it to your chalet on check-in day.
You then travel luggage-free. That is what makes the bullet train realistic: Shinkansen to Nagano with a day bag, then a bus or a small van, no ski bags in the aisle, no fight with an overnight bus about boards.
Two nights allows about 48 hours for forwarding to arrive. One night and you can beat your own bags to the chalet.
Use the contact page before you fly. The office address and waybill name are provided. Not the chalet. Address bags to Hakuba White Fox office. Bags are taken to the chalet on check-in day.
Then use Central Tokyo to Hakuba for the morning you come up.
Train and bus, or a private van
Public transport gets you to a bus terminal. A private van goes to the chalet.

Should I drive from Tokyo to Hakuba in winter?
For most international visitors, we don’t recommend renting a car in Tokyo solely to drive to Hakuba. Winter driving conditions can be challenging, and the train or private transfer is usually easier. If you want a vehicle during your stay, renting a 4WD with winter tyres in Hakuba is often the simpler option.

If we stay in Tokyo, should we bring the bags up?
No. Send them from the airport to the Hakuba White Fox office, travel luggage-free, take the bullet train. Bags are placed in the chalet on check-in day.
Where do I send the luggage?
Hakuba White Fox office, not the chalet. The waybill address is sent by email.
Is there a Tokyo to Hakuba bullet train?
No train goes all the way. Shinkansen to Nagano, then bus or van. One daily Azusa goes Shinjuku–Hakuba. Luggage-free is what makes the Nagano route pleasant.
Van or mini-bus?
The van is 10-person including the driver. With suitcases and ski bags it is about seven guests. Bigger than that: mini-bus.
Can you pick us up from Haneda or Narita?

We do not provide transfers from Nagano Station; a private taxi from Nagano Station directly to your chalet is typically about ¥31,000 and is booked separately.
